Marni for H&M, Singapore

H&M Singapore started selling their Marni stuff at 8am on 8 March 2012!
As usual, there were people who queued up overnight for it!

These photos are of those who came to queue in the morning, photo taken at  around 11am.

I did not want to wait 12 hrs or more on the street! So I went at 9.30am and was quite surprised that they had already finished distributing the colored bracelets(with these, you get to go in at an allocated time slot)!
So we had to queue up for our chance to buy the collection(we can only enter after 11.30am)! They allowed about 40 people at any one time, pretty good crowd control! So we sat down and waited in line for 2 hrs! By the time it was our turn, there were still quite alot to choose from! However, the people at the front of our line swept the entire accessories collection leaving us with only earrings and sunglasses! Too bad for us, we lost the chance to buy it but it saved our purses!

I first learned about Marni in 2002, when I was working for Club21 Singapore. Usually when you first tell people "Marni" they will tell you "oh Armani arh!". It really happens very often! When I was standing in line, I was really curious of all the people who were there, how many actually knew about the brand prior to the collaboration with H&M! I guess H&M's collaboration with these high street fashion can really create a greater awareness for their brand and of course, generate sales!

I am happy with my purchase taking into consideration it only took me 2 hrs and not 12 hrs! I managed to grab the last box of bangles (some kind soul changed their mind), a pair of sandals, a dress and a scarf!

Tiong Bahru - Charming Singapore

When I was taking planes more often than buses (ie. spending more time overseas than in Singapore), I kind of like to read about new food places in Singapore. After i left my job, I had this whole list of stuff to do in Singapore! It is like visiting a new country, one that i did not see much in the last 5.5years!

Last weekend, I went to Tiong Bahru market for some Lor Mee ( for the benefit of those who do not stay in Singapore ,it is a type of noodle)! I had 2 of my wisdom tooth removed last thursday and yet I had this strong craving for Lor Mee! I managed to eat maybe 1/4 portion as chewing was extremely tough with stitches in my mouth! Nevertheless, it was yummy. I will probably do another post on Lor Mee next time!

The charming cafes and shops in Tiong Bahru is good for a lazy brunch or a afternoon walk. The Tiong Bahru market( and the housing flats) there provided a strong contrast for the hippie cafes and shops where old meets new. Uniquely Singapore it is!

If you are walking around the area, be prepared to feel a little lost because the shops are not lined up in a neat row but scattered around. It adds to the charm, doesnt it?

Point to note, I went to 40 hands on a Sunday morning, too crowded and the area is really cramp and small!
I think it is better off going to Drips for some desserts (tarts, maybe?) and Books Actually to grab a book!
I am waiting for my stitches to heal so that i can explore a little more about the area! Will update this post with more info after my next visit!

Till then, please checkout this useful link below for a guide to all the hippie cafe and stores of Tiong Bahru! It includes a visual guide to where the stores are located and web links to the individual stores!

Know the plastic that we use!

A few weeks back, I was searching high and low for plastic bags to hold my cookies. I was looking for pretty ones, but in Singapore they are so hard to find! Sometimes, when you see a nice plastic bag you wonder if it is food safe! So i found this helpful website (http://healthychild.org/)  to learn more about the plastic that we use everyday!

I took this from the website:

Plastics are everywhere and in most cases are very affordable and convenient. But, increasingly scientists are finding that a hidden cost may be our health. Some common plastics release harmful chemicals into our air, foods, and drinks. Maybe you can’t see or taste it, but if you’re serving your dinner on plastic, you’re likely eating a little plastic for dinner.
Beyond the immediate health risks, our increasing use of plastics is causing an enormous amount of enduring pollution. Every bit of plastic that has ever been created still exists (except for the little bit that has been incinerated, which releases toxic chemicals). In the ocean, plastic waste is accumulating in giant gyres of debris where, among other thing, fish are ingesting toxic plastic bits at a rate which will soon make them unsafe to eat.
Plastic is generally toxic to produce, toxic to use, and toxic to dispose of. Luckily, we can all make safer choices.

What to Do

The best thing to do is to reduce your use of plastic. Look for natural alternatives like textiles, solid wood, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, etc. Also, look for items with less (or no) plastic packaging. If you do buy plastic, opt for products you can recycle or re-purpose (e.g. a yogurt tub can be re-used to store crayons). And, get to know your plastics – starting with this guide:
The most common plastics have a resin code in a chasing arrow symbol (often found on the bottom of the product).
 1-PETE PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate): AVOID
Common Uses: Soda Bottles, Water Bottles, Cooking Oil Bottles
Concerns: Can leach antimony and phthalates esp when bottle is exposed to heat
2–HDPE HDPE (High Density Polyethylene): SAFER
Common Uses: Milk Jugs, Plastic Bags, Yogurt Cups
3-PVCPVC (Polyvinyl Chloride, aka Vinyl): AVOID
Common Uses: Condiment Bottles, Cling Wrap, Teething Rings, Toys, Shower Curtains
Concerns: Can leach lead and phthalates among other things. Can also off-gas toxic chemicals.
4-LDPE LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene): SAFER
Common Uses: Produce Bags, Food Storage Containers
5-PPPP (Polypropylene): SAFER
Common Uses: Bottle Caps, Storage Containers, Dishware
6-PSPS (Polystyrene, aka Styrofoam): AVOID
Common Uses: Meat Trays, Foam Food Containers & Cups
Concerns: Can leach carcinogenic styrene and estrogenic alkylphenols
7-OtherOther this is a catch-all category which includes:
PC (Polycarbonate): AVOID - can leach Bisphenol-A (BPA). It also includes ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile), Acrylic, and Polyamide. These plastics can be a safer option because they are typically very durable and resistant to high heat resulting in less leaching. Their drawbacks are that they are not typically recyclable and some need additional safety research. New plant-based, biodegradable plastics like PLA (Polylactic Acid) also fall into the #7 category.

I thought the info was really useful, do checkout their website for other tips on household cleaners etc that are safe for our family!
